I am a fan of Thea Harrison's work. So it pained me to have a negative opinion of one of her books.

However, I just could not get into a story where the male character punched his future love interest in the face, and later pounded her head into the pavement. Another sticking point is that they both plotted to murder each other in the beginning, selfishly disregarding the effect this would have on the small band of sentinels responsible for keeping world peace among the Wyr and inter-demesnes.

These were not characters that I particularly liked, or cared about. I understand that her motive was to have a fierce heroine in this one. But trying to kill each other and the woman getting punched in the face and throttled by the man she would later love? ... No. Just...No. Somehow this worked in the movie Mr and Mrs Smith, but I don't know how the writers did it. Perhaps because neither one seriously was going to go through with their assassination attempt, and they didn't show Mr Smith actually kicking Mrs Smith - it was hidden behind the couch and somehow made to look like rough sparring. In this case, they were dead serious. And this was a major character reversal from the protective Quentin in Dragon Bound.

I read this installment of the Elder Series...reluctantly. *hides head in shame* Aryal is my least favorite Sentinel. I am all about girl power and Aryal is the epitome of it. I just didn't connect with her in the previous books so naturally I was not excited about a story featuring her.

But hey, this is Thea Harrison and the Elder Series that we are talking about...so it has to be good. I mean she has not disappointed me yet.

Well, Kinked was a little to kinked for me. Don't get me wrong, I am no prude and definitely enjoy my share of erotica genre. However, I was not prepared for the author to go in that direction (Boy, I did not see that coming). Especially since there was know previous indication of this subject matter. In my opinion, it felt out of place. The other books were hot and steamy but nothing of this nature. I would not have an issue with it if again, it was introduced in the series either throughout or in the beginning or even in her novella series. But at book 6 I thought I knew what to expect from the series. I don't mean to harp on this but it made a huge impact on me when I was reading it...because I wasn't expecting it from this series.

Okay, now that I got that out I am going to move on. This was a strange read for me. Really, I should have put it down and walked away and not for the reasons previously stated. The majority of the book focused merely on Aryal and another Sentinel, Quentin, whom we've also met in earlier books. To say they hate each other would be putting it mildly.

In my opinion, the reader had to trudge through the ever reminder that they don't like each other and why. There was very little interaction with other characters. Then they get banned by the sexy Dragos for fighting and sent to the otherworld to do some reconnaissance.

Then it was just the two of them...no-one else in the Otherworld but them. I painfully waited for something to happen...because there was build up you knew something was going on. But oh for the love of gawd it took forever! I was practically 80% into the book before other characters appeared. Although this is not a new style for the author, most of the other books are like this. It's just that this is the first time I noticed.

Yes, after all of that I rated this book 4 stars. Why? Because Thea Harrison is a brilliant writer. She kept me involved in this story. It called to me when I was not reading it. And most of all she changed how I felt about Aryal in the end.

Yes, this is my least favorite of this series. However, I am still a huge fan of Thea Harrison and The Elder Series. I can't wait to see what she has in store for the next book.
Elder Races 6

After one violent confrontation too many, Aryal and Quentin Caeravorn are banished from New York City for a minimum of two weeks by Dragos. They are given a mission to secure the devastated Elven lands of Numenlaur, certify that there has been no looting or trespass. The plan is either they reach an accord or one kills the other. Either way, peace will reign.

These two are NOT gentle lovers. Control and the willingness to relinquish that control to the other is a big part of their relationship. Yep, that's right, we have some BDSM in this one. I've like snarky, nasty, tough, vicious Aryal from the beginning, so I was very glad she found someone who could accept her as she was rather than trying to change her. Quentin has a huge guilt and shame factor going on deep inside him. Frankly, I think Dragos would understand. I truly loved this one. The ending about ruined me, but ultimately in a good way. 5 out of 5.

THE STORY Aryal, the Harpy Sentinel, is angry. She knows that the new sentinel Quentin Caeravorn is a career criminal but she has been unable to pin anything on him after two years of investigation. Quentin doesn't like the harpy either. When the two end up fighting again, their boss Dragos has had enough. He send the two off on an assignment together to deal with their issues or end up killing one another.

OPINION This is a seriously aggressive romance with lots of fighting and danger. This is a serious hate to love romance. In the beginning Aryal and Quentin are physically fighting one another. Although they end up in love, these two remain aggressive, dominant characters that are only willing to give in to one another. These are a genuine fighting pair both in love and in work. I love how their romance develops even though it is through their aggressive, argumentative natures. This romance doesn't cheat by making the hard edged Aryal sweet and traditionally feminine in order to show her love. She is feminine in a strong warlike way that fits her personality.

WORTH MENTIONING I like seeing Dragos and Pia and their son Liam again.

FINAL DECISION KINKED is an intense story because both Aryal and Quentin are strong willed rather violent personalities. I especially liked that Aryal remains true to her character and the story doesn't try to transform her but instead fully accepts her harpy nature.

CONNECTED STORIES KINKED is the sixth book in the Elder Races series. It can be read as a standalone although there are continuing stories and characters that a new reader will have to catch up on.
