Dinner with a Perfect Stranger An Invitation Worth Considering David Gregory Jeff Woodman 9780739322833 Books

Dinner with a Perfect Stranger: An Invitation Worth Considering by David Gregory is a personal growth book on developing a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.

This book is a short, simple and easy read that you could finish in an hour or two over a cup of coffee or tea.

This book is written from the perspective of a man who is invited to a dinner with an unknown guest who turns out to be Jesus. The man is not a very good dinner guest, but Jesus takes the time and patience with him to share His blessings.

I like that this book is low on the guilt, prosletyzing, fear mongering, hellfire and brimstone and all that nastiness that often comes with "hey why aren't you a Christian yet" books. Instead, Gregory presents the basic tenents of Christianity, such as love thy neighbor, which are also what draw me as a Believer.

And from what I know about Jesus, I can totally picture him sitting back with some jerk of a dude who is all sarcastic and then having the man walk away humbled and alivened (if that is a word).

Dinner with a Perfect Stranger An Invitation Worth Considering David Gregory Jeff Woodman 9780739322833 Books Reviews

I can't begin to put into words my feelings of the gift of this book. The main character, Nick is like any other harried husband, over worked employee, & grouchy neighbor. He is just like majority of humans walking Earth in a semi conscious state, until his humdrum world gets shaken to its core. I enjoyed this book because it left me with a gift. A gift only the biblical word can give. Find it in its pages & u will receive the gift.
After reading Imaginary Jesus a friend recommended this book to me as something similiar. Perhaps had I read this book first I might have enjoyed it more.

Gregory explores the tennants of Christianity through a dinner invitation from Jesus himself to an unbeliever that had some of the world's knowledge about Christianity, but was filled with confusion and untrue beliefs. Through the meal the reader is brought along on a discussion of questions that many may have for the real Jesus. Why are the other religions wrong? What makes following you so special? What does it mean to be a Christian? How do "bad things" fit into God's plan? When answers that we are commonly given, for example Jesus is asked, "Why has Christianity been such a mixed bag?" refering to people claiming to follow Christ that have done a lot of good and others who have done a lot of bad, the author attempts to give it a little more depth. Jesus responds that those who did bad were not really Christians. Our guest responsd with,"that seems a little convenient for you". This allows "Jesus" to delve into the heart of the matter.

While this book is definately evangelical in nature, and at times very simplistic, it does provide a casual setting to open discussions about who Jesus really is and what it truly means to follow him. I don't think it was meant to be an end of the road type book, rather a beginning, a springboard to encourage the reader to seek out deeper answers to the questions that are posed.

The writing is good, the characters aren't very deep, especially Nick Cominsky. The reader is given a very small sliver of his life and personality making it difficult to really connect with him. Jesus comes off less caring than I would have prefered. The whole discussion feels as if the two are discussing a business arrangement rather than a personal life decision. This approach, however, may appeal to those who are more analytical than emotional.
this is a short story of a man named Nick who is invited to dinner with Jesus. Nick is representative of todays society, overworked, overstressed, angry, impatient, sarcastic. He has a wife and young child who see him rarely due to his job. He goes to an Italian restaurant and dines with a man in a suit who says he is Jesus. Chapters of the book are broken up into different pats of the meal,e.g. salad, entree, desert etc. Each chapter is filled with interesting conversation and you will find yourself wondering how it will end up. I found this easy to read and thought provoking. Because of the brevity of the story, you do not get detailed explanation of Jesus comments and observations. You will find yourself wondering what you would ask of Jesus if you had the chance. I recommend it.
I had only known the grace of salvation, not the continuing beauty of God's ongoing grace after salvation. It took almost 20 years of post-salvation self-effort and failure before I was ready to hear the truths in Dinner with a Perfect Stranger. And David Gregory shares this grace through fiction. I'd read a number of grace-filled, non-fiction books and they were very helpful and enlightening. But Dinner with a Perfect Stranger gives Life and Breath to these realities. David brings up life issues that we all think about but often do not discuss, let alone resolve. He brings vitality and fresh strength to what our real relationship with Jesus can be on a day-by-day basis. I was captivated by this New York Times best seller and have recommended this classic many, many times. It will revitalize your life with the Savior. Five stars isn't enough for this one!
