I love everything about Phantom of the Opera: The book, the movie adaptations, the musicals, etc. But usually I am disappointed when I read spinoffs of the original novel or even the musical. I unlike most fans root for Raoul and Christine, for many reasons which are not relevant to this particular situation. However, in the book the character of the Phantom is so underdeveloped that man provides so many questions to dwell on the book seems almost not complete.
First, this book is incredibly well written. Kay is a wonderfully articulate writer and she tells her story through several narrators which all have their own unique voice. She sticks to Leroux's physical appearance, but takes a slightly gentler view of the Phantom much like the Lloyd Webber musical. i recommend this book to fans of Phantom in any form. Being a fan of Michael Crawford (the original Phantom in the musical) it is easy to imagine the beautiful voice Kay talks about. I know that based on several interviews many actors who play the Phantom take inspiration for their incarnation of this fictional character from Kay's book.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It tells the story of Erik the Phantom from the time before his birth. It's a great book that will give you a different understanding of the Phantom and in turn it will help you understand and actually feel what the phantom has felt and feels in the Phantom of the opera. Susan Kay captures the feeling and details only the true Phantom would know. It has one period in the book that gets slow but its worth getting through and def a copy any book reader should have on their shelf. The only con had to do with shipping. I bought from the west coast and it took a very very long time to get here. It might have just been the seller...I had to send some emails to find out what was going on and why the tracking didnt work. It took way too long for the shipping price I paid.
I have become a huge fan of both the 2004 movie Phantom of the Opera and the stage production at Royal Albert Hall. Love the Phantom (especially Gerard Butler and Ramin Karimloo)!! Not believing I could be enraptured by a book, I nonetheless purchased this book because of the good reviews and am I glad I did!!! Susan Kay writes beautifully and I was caught up on the first page! She brought the story to life with such emotion and believability!! Super work, Ms. Kay....I will read it again, no doubt!!
This book is beautiful, I've seen the musical, seen recent films, and read the original book. The phantom was always left in a cloud of mystery, we was always portrayed as this other worldly being - making it difficult to connect with the character, as one is left star struck by his illusions to revere him as a monster/deity.
This incredible book reveals so much about the phantom (in
Kay's researched point of view at the very least), and places us on his level of thinking and emotion, which made him seem all the more real and fascinating.
The only thing keeping this book from 5 stars, is the ending chapter through Raoul's perspective.

I felt I would've finished this book on a much better note if it ended with the phantom, and not with a salty DeChangney. But be it as it may, the ending chapters had nice subtle details where Kay's researched point of view led her version of the Phantom of the Opera.
When I was a kid, a music teacher got us into the musical Phantom of the Opera; after that, I went about scaring up the original book from the 19th century, which only left a lot of yearning for something more -- the musical really expanded on the story with a lot more pathos than the book seemed to have, and hinted at the Phantom's past. What happened to this guy to turn him into this incredible genius who worships all things beautiful, but turned him into a tragic, kinda psychotic guy?

Turns out, Susan Kay has the answer. I read this many, many years ago and it's really a gem. So much so that I had to track down a hard cove for my own private library. Is it a literary masterpiece for the ages? No. The prose is basic, meant to entertain, a kind of sweeping, romantic soap opera. But it delivers, with heartbreaking satisfaction. Even though elite writers would probably pan it, this book paints such a vivid portrait, a saga spanning continents from the Phantom's childhood, it's really a bildungsroman for the Phantom. The theme of ugliness, beauty, tragedy abound. It's also got a rich taste of angst with these memorable characters. A particular section that describes the Phantom's apprenticeship to a stone mason is especially haunting as the main character stumbles through the difficulties of social conventions and cues and completely misreads the stone mason's daughter's obsession with him as antagonism, when in fact, she is in love with him.

Pick it up if you enjoy the subject matter, you likely won't be disappointed.
This book changed my life. Before I read this I was a boring normie working at a bookstore; now I'm an extravagantly wealthy sociopath living in a sewer while singing at strangers I think are pretty. The only change I make now is drastic topographical changes to local opera houses through the use of heavy explosives. A+
