The story line was a little unbelievable...a washed out high school football hero falling for a pregnant wife of a Mexican drug lord after he already had several failed relationships. Not a smart move, but one we as men could probably make. As a traveler of Big Bend, I was most interested in the descriptions of the territory and landmarks. But overall it was a good book. Worth the read if you like fiction.
This relatively new author is a breathe of fresh air during the economically stressed times of our present society. This book is a very gripping story that pulls you into it's realism immediately. For those of us from small town America it takes us all back to a time that we can personally relate to. Back when honesty and human compassion for our fellow man was truly a part of our heritage and when the Good won over the Bad! If you are looking for a book that will whisk you from today's troubles and carry you to a time when good prevailed over evil with excitement, love, honesty, and the intrigue of truth mixed with fiction that we can all relate to...... this is a must have book.
I hate football and drug my feet reading this. BUT then Buster got out of Odessa and it became a first rate thriller...a very original work! As Samuel told David in the Bible "Play the man!" 2 Samuel 1012 Very interesting colloquial spin on a dangerous adventure. This would make a marvelous movie as would his book, Crude Death.
Authentic West Texan, from the vernacular to the very accurate descriptions of the West Texas scenery. Mr. Ingram has obviously been there and gives us a strong story line, great character development from the protagonist to that "damn" cat. This novel is about a down-and-out "good old boy" West Texan who meets a pregnant mother and middle school daughter who are on desperate times. He, against his better judgment, ends up standing in the breach between them and a bunch of bad guys. Throw in the feisty teenager's mouth on steroids and you have one great story that ..... "Ya don't wanna miss." The hope is that Mr. Ingram will bring back Buster McGruder and friends for a sequel or three. I would say, such great and believable characters deserve another go-round. In closing, I think this fresh new author to the West Texas scene will give Cormac McCarthy, that other writer who has captured the West Texas way of life, a run for his money. In the West Texas lingo, this book is best captured by saying ..."Yah Hoo!It's a good un."
