This was an excellent book dealing with the Stockholm Syndrome, which I was quite interested in reading about. I felt the author understood how it worked and illustrated that well throughout the novel.

Initially I thought the author had too much co-incidence in her plot as I neared the ending, but when the why was explained, it made sense and worked quite well.

I was glued to this book. It had an interesting subject, a good twist and it educated me. It was a bit difficult for me at times. I have my own experience with domestic violence and being held against my will. It was different from Beth’s experience but certain scenes did bring that punched in the stomach feeling to me. I did not know very much of Stockholm Syndrome. That was very interesting to read about. I learned quite a bit.
I don’t know that I liked Beth that much. Maybe it was that I didn’t always understand her. Maybe I was comparing us too much. Maybe it was that I wasn’t as brave as she was. I shattered like glass..something I still feel guilty about. At times her bravery terrified me because I knew what could happen. I thought a lot about family dynamics and how things connected.
The book is told from Beth, Dominic and Ursula’s points of view. I’m not overly fond of multiple points of view but, in this case, it worked very well. Being able to follow each person’s thoughts brought the story to life. It added a necessary understanding.
The story was gripping, sad at times, intense and terrifying. I thought the ending was done right for the story. I don’t want to go into it for fear of spoiling it. It worked for me. I’m happy I selected this book.
I'd like to start off my review by saying just how intense this novel really is. It reminded me a lot of the kind of psychological thriller that the movie Fallen was for me. As pure entertainment, this book was great. But there's also another level to it where I got to explore a well done novel about Stockholm Syndrome and its effects on one young woman. We've heard about this before and there are plenty of novels that romanticize a captured person falling in love with their captive. Its actually a pretty common romance trope. But those stories don't have anything on this one and this novel isn't portrayed as a romance novel, which is what I normally read and was so very glad to see Stockholm Syndrome done well and honestly given the kind of in depth attention it needs rather than assuming everything will just work out perfectly. No, this book gives the reality of what some people experience and its gritty and hard to deal with at times but its worth going through the journey that this book takes you on because it is powerful and if you like psychology and you enjoy thrillers then please take a chance on this one because you won't be disappointment.
Maggie James kept my eyes peeled to each page in The Second Captive. A psychological read about Beth an average 18 year old whose naiveté and grandiose dreams get into a world of hot water with predator Dominic Perdue. Life has played an evil number on Dominic Perdue, who grew up with an abusive father who did unspeakable crimes. The images and his father’s raging temper, control issues, and psychological illness repeat themselves inside Dominic’s head as he abducts Beth and forces her into a lifestyle that he has complete control over.

Dominic wines and dines Beth drawing her into his well thought out labyrinth of terror. Once he caught his prize he lures her into a basement where he keeps her captive. Her life, comforts, food depends on him. James carefully summarizes the feeling and emotions of both Beth and Dominic and captures the essence of their relationship between abductor and abductee. As a reader their emotions became my emotions. All the love, hate, fear, anxiety, and sadness both protagonists felt became my own.One page I felt bad for Dominic then next I wanted Beth to find some way, anyway, to escape the confines of the basement and do Dominic in.

I found many elements of the psychological thriller to be relevant and true to life. Most of us haven’t experienced Stockholm Syndrome, but we have read the papers and watched the news. In some cases we have friends or family that have experienced the repercussions of it in some manner, whether a friend, relation, or career in the psychological field. She seized the raw emotions of both characters giving this book such a realistic quality that I would believe she had been a victim herself.

An excellent, chilling tale.
I loved this from the beginning to the end, a creepy dark, psychological thriller. It is written in two different parts, during captivity and after, with each being different and very enjoyable, you really get into the captives head during the book. What a creepy guy. This is a very tense book, very well written, paced, there is not a dull moment.
In the second half, Beth's mum is the other character, I didn't like her much to start with, as I think the problem was that I had gotten used to Dominic, but she grew on me as the pages turned. This is a very emotional book, during the second part I wanted to scream at Beth just to get on with things, but at the same time I understood why it was difficult. Dominic is a nasty character and the author does a great job of getting that thought to the readers, he is just awful there is no love lost there.
This is a very, very good book, I wondering throughout if I would be able to survive the ordeal, or what I would do in Ursula's shoes. This is the first book I have read by the author and I will be reading more soon.
